Technical Director

Role

Leads technical strategy, architecture, production feasibility, and engineering/art pipeline decisions.

Description

A Technical Director leads the technical strategy and execution of an immersive project. The role defines technical architecture, evaluates feasibility, coordinates technical disciplines, manages risk, and makes sure creative goals can be delivered within real constraints.

Discipline-Specific Description

In immersive media, the Technical Director often connects software, hardware, technical art, installation systems, capture workflows, performance constraints, and exhibition operations. They help prevent isolated technical decisions from creating problems across the wider production.

Scope Note

The role commonly includes technical planning, architecture, pipeline oversight, platform decisions, integration strategy, performance targets, technical reviews, risk management, and supervision of specialized technical contributors. It does not normally replace every specialist role doing the implementation work.

Boundary Note

Technical Director can mean different things in games, theatre, film, animation, and installation. In immersive media, the role should be defined by the project's technical system: software runtime, hardware stack, media pipeline, live operation, spatial setup, or some combination of these.

Collaboration Note

Technical Directors work closely with creative directors, producers, developers, technical artists, installation teams, sound teams, capture teams, and venue operations. Their collaboration is strongest when technical decisions are documented and connected to schedule, budget, and audience experience.
