Creative Director

Role

Leads the creative vision, priorities, and coherence of an immersive work.

Description

A creative director leads the overall creative vision of an immersive work. The role sets priorities, frames intent, guides major creative decisions, and helps keep narrative, design, visual, technical, sound, spatial, and production choices aligned with the central proposition of the project.

Creative Direction Context

Within creative direction, the creative director acts as a high-level steward of coherence. They may not design every system or make every asset, but they maintain the project’s conceptual center and help resolve tradeoffs between ambition, clarity, resources, medium, and audience experience.

Scope Note

Typically includes defining creative intent, approving major creative decisions, guiding tone and experience goals, aligning departments, interpreting feedback, and protecting the integrity of the work across development, production, installation, and presentation.

Boundary Note

This role overlaps with artistic direction, immersive direction, narrative direction, and experience direction, but is broader than any one department. It should not be confused with project management, production ownership, or sole authorship of every creative element.

Collaboration Note

Common collaborators include producers, experience directors, narrative directors, art directors, technical leads, sound leads, spatial designers, dramaturgs, research leads, and platform or exhibition partners.
