Show Operator

Role

Operates live technical systems, resets, cues, and monitoring during public presentation.

Description

A Show Operator runs or supervises the live technical execution of an immersive work during presentation. The role may start sessions, monitor systems, reset hardware, trigger cues, handle participant flow, and respond to technical issues without disrupting the experience.

Discipline-Specific Description

In immersive media, the Show Operator sits between exhibition operations, technical support, facilitation, and show control. The role is especially important for headset-based installations, multi-user works, projection environments, mixed-reality rooms, and timed festival presentations.

Scope Note

The role can include opening and closing procedures, cue operation, headset or device management, calibration checks, troubleshooting, reset procedures, and communication with facilitators or front-of-house staff. It does not usually include redesigning the experience or rewriting the underlying system.

Boundary Note

A Show Operator is not the same as a general gallery attendant. The role requires operational knowledge of the specific work, including failure states, reset procedures, safety concerns, timing, and escalation paths.

Collaboration Note

Show Operators collaborate with installation technicians, facilitators, front-of-house leads, technical directors, producers, and venue staff. Clear run books, cue sheets, reset guides, and escalation protocols are central to the role.
