XR Developer

Role

Develops software for VR, AR, MR, spatial computing, and immersive platforms.

Description

An XR Developer builds experiences for virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, or spatial computing platforms. Their work connects the project to headsets, controllers, hand tracking, passthrough, spatial anchors, room setup, platform rules, and device performance.

In immersive media, this role directly shapes embodiment. The XR Developer helps determine how scale feels, how input works, how comfortable the experience is, how the participant understands the space, and how the work runs on its target hardware.

Discipline-Specific Description

Within real-time software development, the XR Developer translates creative goals into the realities of immersive hardware. Device limits are more than technical constraints; they shape what the participant can do, how long they can remain comfortable, and what the work can feel like.

Scope Note

May include VR, AR, MR, headset SDKs, spatial computing APIs, controller input, hand tracking, gaze, passthrough, anchors, room setup, tracking spaces, locomotion, comfort settings, performance optimization, platform deployment, and integration with interaction, UX, audio, animation, VFX, and networking systems.

Boundary Note

XR development overlaps with interaction programming, Unity development, Unreal development, gameplay programming, technical art, UX design, accessibility implementation, and build deployment. Its center is the immersive platform layer: device capabilities, tracking, input, performance, and embodied presentation.

Collaboration Note

Commonly works with interaction designers, UX designers, gameplay programmers, technical artists, sound designers, animators, VFX artists, accessibility designers, build engineers, QA testers, producers, and installation teams.
