Lighting Technical Artist

Role

Builds lighting setups that serve mood, clarity, performance, and real-time display conditions.

Description

A Lighting Technical Artist helps make lighting work creatively and technically inside a real-time scene. They shape mood, visibility, focus, atmosphere, and spatial clarity while also managing performance and display limits.

In immersive media, lighting affects how participants understand space and where they place attention. It can support story, comfort, navigation, safety, and emotional tone. In a headset or installation, lighting also has to work under strict technical constraints.

Discipline-Specific Description

In technical art practice, the Lighting Technical Artist connects visual direction to engine lighting systems. They help build lighting setups that look intentional, run efficiently, and remain stable across scenes, devices, and venues.

Scope Note

May include real-time lighting, baked lighting, dynamic lighting, light probes, exposure, mood, readability, performance checks, scene optimization, and collaboration with environment art and rendering teams.

Boundary Note

Lighting technical art overlaps with lighting design, environment art, rendering, technical art, and art direction. Its center is making lighting serve the experience inside a real-time system.

Collaboration Note

Commonly works with art directors, environment artists, technical artists, Unity or Unreal developers, VFX artists, XR developers, and performance optimization teams.
