Line Producer

Role

Manages the practical budget, schedule, crew, purchasing, and production logistics of a project.

Description

A Line Producer manages the production budget and practical production plan in detail. They help estimate costs, track spending, schedule resources, manage crew or vendor needs, and make sure the production remains financially and logistically realistic.

In immersive media, line producing may need to account for unusual costs such as hardware, software licenses, capture stages, technical staff, installation materials, venue requirements, testing time, travel, shipping, and public operations. The role helps the project stay ambitious while remaining buildable.

Discipline-Specific Description

Within production and project leadership, the Line Producer connects budget decisions to production reality. They help the team understand what each plan costs, where money is being spent, and how changes affect delivery.

Scope Note

May include budget creation, cost tracking, crew or vendor estimates, resource planning, production schedules, expense approvals, cashflow awareness, cost reports, and practical production planning.

Boundary Note

The Line Producer is different from the Executive Producer or general Producer. Their center is the detailed financial and logistical management of production.

Collaboration Note

Commonly works with producers, production managers, project managers, accountants, vendors, department leads, technical producers, and operations teams.
