Budget Planning

Method

A production planning method for estimating, organizing, and tracking the resources needed to make, test, present, and maintain an immersive project.

Description

Budget planning turns a creative and technical proposal into a practical resource plan. In immersive work, this includes people, equipment, software, fabrication, travel, testing, installation, maintenance, and support.

Typical Use

Used during proposals, fundraising, commissioning, pre-production, scope reviews, production management, and delivery planning.

Scope Note

This method can include cost estimates, staff allocations, equipment lists, contingency planning, supplier quotes, licensing costs, hosting costs, festival or venue costs, and budget scenarios for different production scales.

Boundary Note

Budget decisions shape creative scope, technical ambition, platform choice, staffing, and installation design. The budget should make those tradeoffs visible early.

Collaboration Note

Usually led by producers or production managers, with input from directors, technical leads, designers, artists, fabricators, venue teams, and finance or administrative staff.
