Pipeline Technical Director

Role

Designs and maintains production workflows for assets, scenes, media, and data.

Description

A Pipeline Technical Director designs and maintains the workflow that moves assets, scenes, media, and data through a production. They help make sure artists, designers, developers, and technical teams can pass work between tools without losing quality, breaking files, or creating confusion.

In immersive media, pipelines can become complex quickly. A project may involve 3D models, scans, animation, sound, video, shaders, build targets, optimization, and versioned engine scenes. The Pipeline Technical Director helps make that flow repeatable and understandable.

Discipline-Specific Description

Across the whole pipeline, the Pipeline Technical Director protects the production from file chaos. They define how work is named, exported, imported, validated, versioned, optimized, and handed off.

Scope Note

May include asset pipeline design, naming conventions, export tools, import settings, validation scripts, version workflows, automation, documentation, troubleshooting, and coordination across art, design, development, and post-production.

Boundary Note

Pipeline direction is different from general project management. It focuses on the technical path that creative materials follow from creation to final use.

Collaboration Note

Commonly works with technical artists, developers, 3D artists, animators, VFX artists, sound teams, producers, QA testers, and build engineers.
