Dramaturg

Role

Examines structure, meaning, context, participant position, and internal logic of a work.

Description

A Dramaturg helps examine the structure, meaning, context, and internal logic of a work. They may ask how the piece is read by an audience, how its parts relate, what assumptions it makes, and how its themes, references, characters, or participant role are functioning.

In immersive media, dramaturgy can be especially useful because the work may combine space, performance, interaction, technology, installation, and audience care. The Dramaturg helps the team understand what experience is actually being authored.

Creative Direction Context

Within creative direction, the dramaturg often acts as a critical and constructive thinking partner. They help identify where the work’s structure, assumptions, pacing, ethics, or audience contract need clarification before those issues become production problems.

Discipline-Specific Description

Within writing, narrative, and dramaturgy, the Dramaturg brings critical and structural attention to the work. They help clarify meaning, context, sequence, participant position, and the relationship between form and theme.

Scope Note

Typically includes structural analysis, contextual research, audience-position analysis, meaning and coherence notes, ethical questions, rehearsal or script feedback, world logic review, and interpretive framing.

Boundary Note

The role overlaps with writing, research, narrative design, performance direction, and ethics advising. It is not usually final authorship, project management, or general criticism from outside the process.

Collaboration Note

Common collaborators include writers, directors, creative leads, performance directors, researchers, producers, experience designers, community consultants, and ethics advisors.
