A Performance Director shapes how performance functions inside an immersive experience, including acting style, participant address, timing, spatial presence, embodiment, rehearsal process, and live responsiveness. The role helps performers, guides, actors, or operators understand how their presence supports the work’s experiential and narrative goals.

Discipline-Specific Description

In immersive media, the Performance Director often translates between theatre, film, XR interaction, installation, and facilitation. They may direct visible actors, voice performers, motion capture performers, in-world guides, or hidden live operators whose behavior affects the participant experience.

Includes performance style, performer-participant relationship, rehearsal direction, vocal and physical presence, live timing, improvisational parameters, and the emotional or narrative function of performed presence.
