World Director

Role

Leads the coherence, rules, tone, and expressive logic of an immersive world.

Description

A world director leads the coherence of an immersive world: its rules, atmosphere, histories, social logic, visual and sonic identity, spatial behavior, and participant relationship. The role helps make the world feel authored rather than merely assembled.

Creative Direction Context

Within creative direction, the world director is concerned with the internal logic and expressive consistency of the world. They help align story, environment, interaction, character, props, interface, performance, and production detail around a shared world model.

Scope Note

Typically includes world rules, atmosphere, lore, internal consistency, environmental meaning, social relations, symbolic systems, material culture, and the relationship between world and participant.

Boundary Note

This role overlaps with worldbuilding design, art direction, narrative direction, environment art, and dramaturgy. It is not necessarily the same as directing the whole work or producing every world asset.

Collaboration Note

Common collaborators include narrative designers, writers, art directors, environment artists, sound designers, spatial designers, dramaturgs, experience designers, and technical artists.
