Story Mapping

Method

A narrative method for laying out the structure, beats, scenes, choices, and emotional arc of an immersive story.

Description

Story mapping helps a team see how a story unfolds over time and across space. In immersive work, it may track what the participant knows, where they are, what they can do, and how each moment changes the meaning of the experience. It is especially useful when story, interaction, and movement are closely linked.

Typical Use

Used during narrative design, concept development, script development, branching structure, onboarding design, rehearsal, and prototyping.

Scope Note

This method may include scene maps, beat maps, choice maps, emotional arcs, participant-position notes, transition notes, and links between story events and interaction.

Boundary Note

A story map should help the team understand sequence, meaning, and participant role, rather than only listing scenes.

Collaboration Note

Usually involves writers, narrative designers, directors, dramaturgs, experience designers, interaction designers, producers, and developers.
