Usability Testing

Method

A testing method for checking whether participants can understand and use an immersive experience as intended.

Description

Usability testing looks at whether people can figure out what to do, how to do it, and what the system is telling them. In immersive work, this includes interaction cues, feedback, onboarding, physical movement, interface clarity, input methods, and moments where participants become stuck or unsure.

Typical Use

Used during interaction design, prototyping, onboarding design, interface design, accessibility review, training design, installation planning, and final polish.

Scope Note

This method may include task-based tests, observation notes, think-aloud prompts, error tracking, confusion points, facilitator notes, and design recommendations.

Boundary Note

Usability testing focuses on clarity and use. It helps the team see where the experience fails to communicate what participants can do or what is happening.

Collaboration Note

Usually involves UX researchers, interaction designers, playtest leads, producers, developers, accessibility reviewers, facilitators, and representative participants.
