Comprehension Check

Technique

A testing technique for checking whether participants understand what is happening, what they can do, and what the system is telling them.

Description

Comprehension check looks for moments where participants become unsure, misread a cue, miss important information, or misunderstand their role. In immersive work, confusion may come from the story, interface, space, sound, instructions, or staff handoff. The aim is to find where the experience needs clearer communication.

Typical Use

Used during usability testing, playtesting, onboarding design, dramaturgical review, and final polish.

Scope Note

This technique may include short participant questions, observation notes, facilitator logs, cue review, task checks, and notes on where confusion appears.
