Friction Log

Technique

A testing technique for recording moments where participants slow down, hesitate, struggle, or need help.

Description

A friction log captures small problems that may not be full bugs. It records where participants pause, repeat actions, miss cues, ask for help, or seem unsure. These moments often reveal unclear interaction design, weak onboarding, confusing pacing, or accessibility barriers.

Typical Use

Used during playtesting, usability testing, accessibility walkthroughs, onboarding design, journey mapping, and final polish.

Scope Note

This technique may include timestamps, participant actions, hesitation notes, missed cues, facilitator interventions, suspected causes, and suggested follow-up tests.
