Task Observation

Technique

A usability testing technique for watching whether participants can complete a specific task or action.

Description

Task observation focuses on what people actually do. It checks whether participants can find a control, follow an instruction, complete an interaction, move through a step, or recover from a mistake. In immersive work, the observer should also note body movement, gaze, hesitation, comfort, and staff intervention.

Typical Use

Used during usability testing, playtesting, onboarding design, accessibility walkthroughs, QA, and training design.

Scope Note

This technique may include task prompts, success criteria, hesitation notes, error notes, body-position notes, facilitator notes, timing, and follow-up questions.
