Narrative Arc

Technique

A story mapping technique for showing how the story or experience develops from beginning to end.

Description

A narrative arc shows how the experience changes over time. It can track tension, discovery, conflict, reflection, transformation, or resolution. In immersive work, the arc should also consider participant action, spatial movement, interaction, and moments where the participant’s role changes.

Typical Use

Used during story mapping, dramaturgical review, branching narrative design, onboarding design, rehearsal workshops, and playtesting.

Scope Note

This technique may include beginning and ending states, turning points, emotional shifts, reveals, interaction moments, pacing notes, and participant-role changes.
