Beat Map

Technique

A story mapping technique for laying out the key moments, turns, actions, and emotional shifts in an experience.

Description

A beat map shows how an experience unfolds moment by moment. It helps the team see what changes, what the participant learns, when interaction happens, and where the emotional or narrative turns occur. In immersive work, beat maps often connect story beats to space, movement, sound, and participant action.

Typical Use

Used during story mapping, branching narrative design, dramaturgical review, onboarding design, rehearsal, and playtesting.

Scope Note

This technique may include scene beats, interaction beats, emotional turns, reveals, decision points, transitions, and timing notes.
