Artistic Director

Role

Guides artistic intent, aesthetic standards, and cultural or expressive direction.

Description

An artistic director guides the artistic identity, aesthetic standards, expressive tone, and cultural position of a work. In immersive media, this may include visual style, material sensibility, artistic references, performance tone, installation language, and the relationship between form and meaning.

Creative Direction Context

Within creative direction, the artistic director protects the artistic proposition of the project. They help ensure that design, technology, production, and presentation decisions do not flatten the work into only technical novelty or operational delivery.

Scope Note

Typically includes artistic references, style guidance, aesthetic coherence, cultural tone, material choices, image and sound language, performance sensibility, and review of key creative outputs.

Boundary Note

The role overlaps with creative director, art director, visual director, and curator. It is not necessarily responsible for every visual asset, technical implementation, budget decision, or production schedule.

Collaboration Note

Common collaborators include creative directors, art directors, visual designers, sound designers, performance directors, writers, dramaturgs, producers, curators, and exhibition designers.
