Desk Research

Method

A research method for gathering and reviewing existing sources, references, precedents, and background information before or during production.

Description

Desk research builds an initial understanding of a subject without primary fieldwork. In immersive practice, it can inform story framing, design direction, technical feasibility, audience assumptions, historical context, ethical considerations, platform decisions, and precedent analysis.

Typical Use

Used during early development, proposal writing, concept development, documentary research, design research, technical planning, dramaturgy, exhibition interpretation, and educational or cultural projects.

Scope Note

This method can include literature review, precedent review, source gathering, archive review, platform research, standards review, image research, technology scanning, and synthesis of existing reports or public data.

Boundary Note

Desk research should not be treated as a replacement for community consultation, expert interview, field research, or user testing when lived experience, specialist knowledge, or participant behavior matters.

Collaboration Note

Usually involves researchers, writers, dramaturgs, producers, designers, technical leads, archivists, subject experts, and sometimes legal or rights advisors.
