Research Lead

Role

Plans and coordinates research questions, methods, ethics, documentation, and findings for an immersive project.

Description

A Research Lead plans and coordinates the research work around an immersive project. They help define what the team needs to learn, what methods are appropriate, who should be involved, how findings will be documented, and how research should influence creative or production decisions.

In immersive media, research may shape story, interaction, audience understanding, ethics, access, community relationships, evaluation, and public framing. The Research Lead helps make sure research is not treated as decoration or late-stage validation, but as part of how the work is developed responsibly.

Discipline-Specific Description

Within research practice, the Research Lead connects questions, methods, participants, ethics, documentation, and decision-making. They help the team understand what kind of evidence is needed and how that evidence should affect the work.

Creative Direction Context

Within creative direction, the research lead helps prevent the project from relying only on assumption, aesthetic reference, or generic subject matter. They connect the work to lived realities, evidence, historical context, scientific knowledge, community knowledge, or domain expertise.

Scope Note

May include research planning, method selection, participant recruitment, interview design, fieldwork planning, ethics review, documentation, synthesis, reporting, stakeholder communication, and integration of findings into production.

Boundary Note

The Research Lead coordinates the research approach but does not necessarily supply every kind of expertise. Specialist researchers, advisors, community consultants, or subject-matter experts may be needed for particular questions.

Collaboration Note

Commonly works with producers, directors, writers, designers, UX researchers, subject-matter experts, ethics advisors, community consultants, evaluators, and documentation leads.
