Texture Artist

Role

Creates surface detail and visual finish for 3D assets.

Boundary Note

Texture art is distinct from shader programming and material system design, though it depends on them. It also differs from modeling, lighting, and art direction.

Collaboration Note

3D artists, environment artists, character artists, shader artists, technical artists, lighting artists, art directors, and developers.

Description

A Texture Artist creates the surface appearance of 3D assets, including color, roughness, normal detail, wear, pattern, material variation, and visual finish. The role helps objects and environments feel coherent, tactile, stylized, or believable.

Discipline-Specific Description

In immersive media, texture work must hold up at participant proximity while also respecting performance budgets, memory limits, compression, lighting conditions, and real-time material behavior. Surface detail can strongly affect presence and readability.

Scope Note

Texture painting, material maps, UV-aware surface detail, procedural textures, wear and aging, style consistency, texture optimization, and collaboration with shader/material workflows.
