Spatial Audio Sketching

Method

A design method for quickly testing how sound can shape space, attention, movement, and feeling in an immersive work.

Description

Spatial audio sketching uses rough sound placement and simple playback tests to explore how audio might guide an experience. It can show where a participant should look, how large a space feels, whether something seems near or far, and how sound can support story or interaction before final audio production begins.

Typical Use

Used during concept development, prototyping, scene design, installation planning, onboarding design, narrative design, and spatial walkthroughs.

Scope Note

This method may include rough ambience, voice placement, directional cues, distance tests, simple triggers, and quick playback reviews.

Boundary Note

The goal is to answer design questions about space, timing, attention, or feeling before the team commits to final recordings or detailed implementation.

Collaboration Note

Usually involves sound designers, composers, spatial audio engineers, experience designers, interaction designers, directors, developers, and installation designers.
