Distance Falloff Test

Technique

A spatial audio technique for checking how sound changes as the participant moves closer to or farther from a source.

Description

A distance falloff test checks whether sound behaves naturally and clearly in space. It helps the team tune how loud, present, or distant a sound should feel at different positions. In immersive work, falloff can affect attention, navigation, realism, comfort, and story clarity.

Typical Use

Used during sound implementation, spatial audio sketching, installation planning, playtesting, and headset playback review.

Scope Note

This technique may include near/far listening tests, attenuation settings, room-scale movement, headset review, speaker review, and notes on attention or comfort.
