Zone-Based Audio

Technique

A sound implementation technique for changing audio based on the participant’s location or movement through defined areas.

Description

Zone-based audio links sound behavior to spatial zones. Entering, leaving, or moving within a zone may change ambience, voice, music, effects, or system feedback. In immersive work, this can guide attention, support navigation, shape mood, and make the space feel responsive.

Typical Use

Used during sound implementation, spatial audio sketching, installation planning, interaction design, QA, and public presentation.

Scope Note

This technique may include audio zones, trigger areas, fades, transitions, priority rules, room boundaries, headset tests, and speaker tests.
