Show Control Designer

Role

Designs systems that coordinate cues, devices, media playback, lighting, sound, sensors, and live operation.

Boundary Note

Show control is not the same as general software development or technical support, though it often overlaps with both. It focuses on real-time coordination of systems during operation.

Collaboration Note

Developers, technical producers, lighting designers, sound designers, installation designers, technicians, facilitators, venue teams, and safety consultants.

Description

A Show Control Designer creates the control logic that coordinates media playback, lighting, sound, sensors, triggers, devices, cues, resets, and live operation. The role matters most when an immersive work depends on multiple systems behaving together reliably.

Discipline-Specific Description

In installation and physical design, show control connects the experience to its operational reality. It may coordinate headset stations, projection, lighting, spatial audio, actuators, sensors, doors, facilitator controls, emergency stops, and timed sequences.

Scope Note

Cue logic, device control, media synchronization, triggers, sensors, operator panels, reset states, fail-safes, lighting/sound/media coordination, and technical show flow.
