A Community Consultant advises on the needs, concerns, knowledge, and priorities of a specific community connected to a project. They may help the team understand local context, lived experience, access barriers, language, trust, consent, representation, and appropriate ways to engage.

In immersive media, community consultation can affect the ethics and quality of the work. If a project uses community stories, histories, places, or participation, the relationship with that community is part of the project’s substance.

Discipline-Specific Description

Within research practice, the Community Consultant helps the team listen more responsibly. They can identify blind spots, suggest better engagement practices, and help the project avoid treating communities as raw material.

Scope Note

May include community advice, relationship-building, review sessions, access guidance, representation feedback, local context, recruitment advice, consent process feedback, and public-programming input.

Boundary Note

A Community Consultant is not a shortcut to community consent. Their role supports better engagement, but the project may still need broader participation, formal permissions, or long-term accountability.

Collaboration Note

Commonly works with producers, researchers, cultural consultants, ethics researchers, community managers, writers, directors, accessibility advisors, and local partners.
