Publicist

Role

Manages press strategy, media relations, announcements, interviews, and public visibility for a project or artist.

Description

A Publicist manages press visibility and media relations for an immersive project, artist, studio, festival presentation, or release. The role helps shape announcements, press materials, interview opportunities, critic access, and public attention.

In immersive media, publicity often has to explain how the work is experienced as well as what it is about. A press release or interview brief may need to clarify format, duration, participant role, headset or installation setup, access conditions, and why the experience cannot be understood only through a trailer or still image.

Discipline-Specific Description

Within distribution and exhibition operations, the Publicist helps translate the work for journalists, critics, festivals, institutions, and public audiences. They make the project legible without flattening its mystery, form, or artistic identity.

Scope Note

May include press releases, media lists, announcements, interviews, critic access, press kits, artist bios, project descriptions, festival publicity, review coordination, image selection, and coverage tracking.

Boundary Note

Publicity is different from marketing. Marketing focuses on audience reach and campaign strategy; publicity focuses on press, media relationships, editorial visibility, and public explanation through external channels.

Collaboration Note

Commonly works with producers, marketing leads, festival strategists, artists, creative directors, distribution producers, documentation leads, and festival press teams.
