Motion Capture Blocking

Method

A planning method for organizing performer movement before motion capture recording.

Description

Motion capture blocking prepares a performance so it can be captured cleanly and used later. It defines where performers move, what actions need to be recorded, how props are handled, and how the capture space will be used. In immersive projects, it may also account for avatar scale, participant viewpoint, and how the motion will be used in an interactive scene.

Typical Use

Used before motion capture sessions for characters, avatars, training simulations, virtual production, and performance-driven VR.

Scope Note

This method may include movement paths, action beats, performer marks, prop planning, capture-volume limits, take lists, retargeting notes, and safety checks.

Boundary Note

Clear blocking reduces wasted capture time. It helps the team record movement that fits the scene, character, interaction system, and animation workflow.

Collaboration Note

Usually involves directors, motion capture directors, performers, capture technicians, animators, technical artists, real-time developers, movement specialists, and producers.
