Look Development

Method

A visual method for defining how a project should look across materials, lighting, color, and rendering style.

Description

Look development turns visual direction into production choices. It defines how a scene, character, object, or interface should appear in the final work. In immersive projects, this includes how the look holds up at full scale, close range, on the target device, and while the participant moves through the space.

Typical Use

Used when the team needs to move from references or concept art into a clear production style.

Scope Note

This method may include material tests, lighting studies, color palettes, shader tests, style frames, and visual checks on the target device.

Boundary Note

Look development should connect the intended style to the tools, assets, hardware, and viewing conditions that will shape the final work.

Collaboration Note

Usually involves art directors, concept artists, lighting artists, technical artists, 3D artists, real-time developers, directors, and producers.
