Volumetric Capture Planning

Method

A planning method for preparing people, space, equipment, performance, and data workflow for volumetric capture.

Description

Volumetric capture planning sets up the conditions needed to record a person, object, or performance as spatial video or 3D data. It considers the capture volume, performer movement, lighting, wardrobe, props, camera coverage, file size, cleanup needs, and how the captured material will be used in the final experience.

Typical Use

Used for captured performers, documentary scenes, digital humans, mixed reality, virtual production, museum interpretation, training, and spatial storytelling.

Scope Note

This method may include capture plans, performer blocking, wardrobe checks, lighting checks, prop rules, calibration needs, take lists, data storage plans, and post-processing notes.

Boundary Note

Planning is critical because capture mistakes can be expensive or impossible to fix later, especially when performers, locations, or specialist equipment are only available for a short time.

Collaboration Note

Usually involves volumetric capture supervisors, directors, producers, performers, capture technicians, technical artists, real-time developers, sound teams, and post-production specialists.
