Throwaway Prototype

Technique

A quick prototype built to answer a specific question, with no expectation that it will become part of the final project.

Description

A throwaway prototype helps the team learn fast without protecting the prototype as production work. It may test an interaction, spatial idea, technical risk, visual approach, or audience response. In immersive projects, this is useful because some ideas only make sense once they are tried in space, in a headset, or with bodies involved.

Typical Use

Used during rapid prototyping, experience prototyping, interaction design, concept development, technical planning, and pitch preparation.

Scope Note

This technique may include rough builds, paper tests, mock interactions, temporary assets, placeholder audio, notes on what was learned, and a clear decision about whether to continue.
