Sound Mixer

Role

Balances, blends, levels, spatializes, and finalizes sound elements for playback and delivery.

Description

A Sound Mixer balances dialogue, music, effects, ambiences, spatial elements, and system sounds into a coherent listening experience. In immersive media, mixing may involve headphones, speaker arrays, multichannel delivery, live systems, or engine-driven audio states.

Discipline-Specific Description

Within Sound, Music & Voice, the Sound Mixer shapes the final sonic balance and clarity of the work. The role makes sure important information is audible, the emotional arc is supported, and playback works across the intended technical conditions.

Scope Note

Includes levels, balance, EQ, dynamics, spatial balance, bus routing, loudness, clarity, versioning, playback testing, and final mix preparation.

Boundary Note

Distinct from Sound Designer and Composer because it focuses on final balance and sonic integration rather than creating the original material. Distinct from Implementation Audio Designer when mixing is not engine/system logic.

Collaboration Note

Commonly collaborates with sound designers, composers, audio engineers, spatial audio designers, dialogue editors, developers, installation teams, and producers.
