Gaussian Splat / 3D Capture Artist

Role

Captures and prepares spatial scenes or objects using Gaussian splats, radiance fields, scans, or related 3D capture methods.

Description

A Gaussian Splat / 3D Capture Artist creates spatial captures that represent real objects, rooms, people, or places as viewable three-dimensional scenes. This work may use Gaussian splatting or related capture methods that convert photos or video into a spatial representation.

In immersive media, these captures can create a strong sense of presence, but they are also technically sensitive. The artist must consider capture coverage, lighting, movement, cleanup, optimization, file size, playback method, and how the capture will be used in the final experience.

Discipline-Specific Description

Within capture and recorded-media production, this role turns real-world visual material into spatial media. The work sits between photography, scanning, 3D reconstruction, technical art, and real-time presentation.

Scope Note

May include capture planning, image or video capture, scan coverage, reconstruction, cleanup, optimization, quality review, scale checks, export, documentation, and coordination with developers or technical artists.

Boundary Note

Gaussian splat and 3D capture work is related to photogrammetry, scanning, and volumetric capture, but each method produces different kinds of assets with different strengths, limitations, and playback requirements.

Collaboration Note

Commonly works with technical artists, 3D artists, developers, capture teams, producers, environment artists, installation teams, and data wranglers.
