World Rules Sheet

Technique

A worldbuilding technique for stating the rules that govern how a fictional, speculative, or designed world works.

Description

A world rules sheet gives the team clear rules for what can happen in the project’s world. It may define social rules, physical rules, technology rules, magic rules, access rules, or interaction rules. In immersive work, world rules are most useful when they guide what participants can see, do, hear, and understand.

Typical Use

Used during worldbuilding workshops, story mapping, narrative design, interaction design, art direction, and team alignment.

Scope Note

This technique may include world rules, exceptions, examples, participant permissions, constraints, contradictions, and notes on how rules appear in the experience.
