Weight Painting

Technique

A rigging technique for controlling how a 3D mesh deforms when the skeleton or rig moves.

Description

Weight painting defines which bones influence each part of a character or object. It helps movement look smooth and believable. In immersive work, poor deformation can break presence because participants may see characters or avatars close up and from many angles.

Typical Use

Used during rigging workflow, character animation, avatar production, motion capture cleanup, real-time implementation, and QA.

Scope Note

This technique may include joint influence, deformation tests, shoulder and elbow checks, face or hand review, motion tests, export checks, and target-device review.
