Tone Board

Technique

A reference technique for defining the emotional, visual, verbal, or sensory tone of a project.

Description

A tone board helps the team align on how the work should feel. It may use images, words, colors, sounds, textures, quotes, or short examples. In immersive work, tone can affect everything from world design and voice to onboarding, facilitation, sound, and interaction feedback.

Typical Use

Used during moodboarding, creative brief writing, concept development, art direction, writing, sound design, and stakeholder alignment.

Scope Note

This technique may include tone words, reference images, color samples, sound references, writing samples, material notes, and examples of what to avoid.
