Thumbnail Sketching

Technique

A visual thinking technique for making small, quick sketches to explore composition, layout, space, or sequence.

Description

Thumbnail sketching lets the team test many visual ideas quickly. It can help compare scene layouts, camera positions, interface placement, spatial flow, or story moments before more detailed work begins. In immersive work, thumbnails are most useful when paired with notes about scale, viewpoint, and participant attention.

Typical Use

Used during concept art iteration, story mapping, moodboarding, look development, installation planning, and visual planning.

Scope Note

This technique may include small sketches, layout options, viewpoint notes, attention cues, sequence ideas, and comparisons between directions.
