Think-Aloud Session

Technique

A usability testing technique where participants speak their thoughts while they try an experience or task.

Description

A think-aloud session helps the team understand what participants believe is happening while they act. It can reveal confusion, assumptions, expectations, and moments of uncertainty. In immersive work, it should be used carefully because speaking during an experience can change attention, presence, and emotional response.

Typical Use

Used during usability testing, playtesting, onboarding design, accessibility review, task observation, and prototype review.

Scope Note

This technique may include participant prompts, observation notes, task steps, confusion points, direct quotes, facilitator reminders, and post-test comparison.
