Thematic Coding

Technique

A research analysis technique for grouping interview, observation, or feedback material by recurring themes.

Description

Thematic coding helps the team make sense of qualitative material. It identifies repeated ideas, concerns, needs, language, or patterns across research. In immersive projects, it can support story development, community consultation, design choices, accessibility review, and evaluation.

Typical Use

Used during field research, community consultation, expert interviews, playtesting, post-experience interviews, and design research.

Scope Note

This technique may include codes, excerpts, theme groups, research notes, comparison across participants, interpretation notes, and open questions.
