Style Exploration

Technique

A visual development technique for testing possible visual styles before the team commits to a final direction.

Description

Style exploration compares different ways the project could look and feel. It may test line quality, color, materials, lighting, level of realism, interface style, or world design. In immersive work, the style must be checked at scale and on the target display because a look that works in an image may not work in a headset or installation.

Typical Use

Used during concept art iteration, look development, moodboarding, art direction, pitch preparation, and visual prototyping.

Scope Note

This technique may include sketches, style frames, paintovers, color studies, material tests, reference comparisons, and target-device review.
