Paintover

Technique

A visual development technique for drawing or painting over an existing image, render, screenshot, or frame to show possible changes.

Description

A paintover helps a team discuss visual direction quickly. It can show changes to lighting, color, composition, materials, interface, scale, or atmosphere without rebuilding the scene. In immersive work, paintovers are useful when a screenshot or render needs clearer design feedback.

Typical Use

Used during concept art iteration, look development, art direction, environment design, interface design, and stakeholder review.

Scope Note

This technique may include annotated images, lighting changes, color changes, material notes, layout suggestions, scale corrections, and comparison versions.
