Observation Protocol

Technique

A research technique for deciding what to watch, record, and compare during testing, fieldwork, or walkthroughs.

Description

An observation protocol gives the team a shared way to watch an experience. It defines what observers should look for, how notes should be taken, and which moments matter most. In immersive work, this may include gaze, movement, hesitation, comfort, staff support, confusion, and interaction attempts.

Typical Use

Used during playtesting, usability testing, field research, accessibility walkthroughs, participatory walkthroughs, and rehearsal.

Scope Note

This technique may include observation prompts, timing notes, participant behavior, environmental notes, staff actions, issue categories, and follow-up questions.
