High-to-Low Bake

Technique

A 3D asset technique for transferring detail from a high-resolution model to a lower-cost real-time model.

Description

A high-to-low bake helps an asset keep visual detail while becoming easier to run in real time. The high-resolution model provides surface detail, and the lower-resolution model carries that detail through texture maps. This is useful when the final experience needs both visual richness and stable performance.

Typical Use

Used during 3D asset production, asset optimization, look development, real-time production, and platform preparation.

Scope Note

This technique may include normal maps, ambient occlusion maps, curvature maps, cage setup, UV checks, texture export, and target-device review.
