Frame-Time Profiling

Technique

A performance technique for measuring how long each frame takes to render or update.

Description

Frame-time profiling helps the team understand performance in real terms. Instead of looking only at average frame rate, it shows whether frames are stable or spiking. In immersive work, unstable frame timing can affect comfort, presence, interaction feel, and motion quality.

Typical Use

Used during device profiling, shader development, asset optimization, QA passes, platform packaging, and final performance review.

Scope Note

This technique may include CPU time, GPU time, frame spikes, render thread cost, update cost, headset refresh targets, and notes on likely causes.
