Emotion Curve

Technique

A story or journey mapping technique for showing how the participant’s emotional experience changes over time.

Description

An emotion curve helps the team see the emotional shape of an experience. It can show tension, relief, curiosity, fear, wonder, confusion, intimacy, or recovery. In immersive work, the curve should account for story, interaction, sound, space, comfort, and the participant’s physical role.

Typical Use

Used during journey mapping, story mapping, dramaturgical review, playtesting, onboarding design, and rehearsal.

Scope Note

This technique may include emotional highs and lows, turning points, rest moments, intensity notes, participant-role notes, and comparison with playtest observations.
