Cardboard Mockup

Technique

A low-cost fabrication technique for testing the size, shape, placement, or use of a physical object or installation element.

Description

A cardboard mockup lets the team test physical ideas before building them in final materials. It is useful for checking scale, reach, posture, sightlines, storage, assembly, and participant movement. Because it is cheap and fast, it invites early changes.

Typical Use

Used during fabrication prototyping, installation planning, experience prototyping, onboarding design, safety review, and physical interface design.

Scope Note

This technique may include rough props, headset stations, control surfaces, room elements, signage tests, furniture tests, and ergonomic checks.
