Blockout

Technique

A rough spatial build used to test scale, layout, movement, sightlines, and interaction before final assets are made.

Description

A blockout uses simple shapes or placeholder assets to build the structure of a space quickly. It helps the team test whether the environment works before investing in detailed art. In immersive work, blockouts are especially useful because scale, distance, reach, and movement are hard to judge from drawings alone.

Typical Use

Used during 3D asset production, environment design, spatial walkthroughs, experience prototyping, interaction design, and installation planning.

Scope Note

This technique may include greybox rooms, placeholder props, rough collision, path tests, scale checks, sightline checks, and interaction zones.
