Audience Position Analysis

Technique

A dramaturgical technique for clarifying who the participant is in relation to the story, space, system, or event.

Description

Audience position analysis asks what role the participant occupies. They may be a visitor, witness, player, performer, patient, trainee, ghost, guest, collaborator, or intruder. Clarifying this position helps the team align story, interaction, interface, movement, and tone.

Typical Use

Used during dramaturgical review, concept development, story mapping, onboarding design, interaction design, and playtesting.

Scope Note

This technique may include participant-role notes, point-of-view checks, agency checks, permission questions, social relationship mapping, and notes on what the participant is expected to know or do.
