Method

A testing method for evaluating how sound behaves in a physical or simulated space before an immersive work is presented to participants.

Description

Acoustic testing examines how sound is heard in the conditions where an immersive work will be experienced. It considers loudness, clarity, localization, reverberation, leakage, masking, intelligibility, and the relationship between sound design and the physical environment.

Typical Use

Used for installations, exhibitions, room-scale VR, spatial audio works, performance-based immersive projects, and multi-user experiences where sound conditions can change participant understanding or comfort.

Scope Note

This method may include speaker checks, headphone checks, room tone assessment, reverberation tests, intelligibility tests, bleed checks, localization tests, and playback level calibration.

Boundary Note

Acoustic testing checks how designed sound behaves in the actual listening context, including the room, headphones, speakers, headset, audience flow, and surrounding noise.

Collaboration Note

Usually involves sound designers, spatial audio engineers, installation designers, technical directors, producers, venue staff, and facilitators.
